Electroencephalogram/Nerve conduction study -EEG/NCS

EEG (Electroencephalogram) and NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies) are diagnostic tools used to evaluate different aspects of the nervous system: 1. **EEG (Electroencephalogram):** – **Purpose:** Records electrical activity of the brain. – **Uses:** Diagnoses and monitors neurological conditions such as epilepsy, seizures, sleep disorders, brain tumors, and brain injury. – **Procedure:** Small electrodes are placed on the scalp to detect electrical signals generated by brain neurons. The signals are recorded and analyzed to identify abnormal patterns. 2. **NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies):** – **Purpose:** Assesses the function of peripheral nerves. – **Uses:** Diagnoses nerve damage or dysfunction, such as peripheral neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, or nerve injuries. Procedure-Electrodes or stimulating pads are placed on the skin over specific nerves. Electrical impulses are delivered, and the response (conduction velocity and amplitude) is measured to evaluate nerve health. – EEG evaluates brain electrical activity. – NCS assesses peripheral nerve function. Both are non-invasive tests crucial in neurology for diagnosing various neurological and neuromuscular conditions.

faq
What is an EEG test and why is it done?

An EEG (Electroencephalogram) is a painless, non-invasive test that records the brain’s electrical activity using small electrodes placed on the scalp. It helps doctors assess how the brain is functioning and is often used to diagnose neurological conditions. Doctors may recommend an EEG to: Detect and monitor seizures or epilepsy. Evaluate causes of unexplained fainting or unconsciousness. Identify sleep disorders. Assess brain activity in conditions like stroke, head injury, or brain infections. At Greenland Clinic, EEG tests are performed by experience doctors and interpreted by experienced neurologists for accurate diagnosis.

What is an NCS (Nerve Conduction Study) and why is it done?

A Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) is a diagnostic test used to measure how well and how fast your nerves send electrical signals to your muscles. It is commonly done to evaluate symptoms like numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, or pain. NCS is used to diagnose: Peripheral neuropathy (often caused by diabetes), Carpal tunnel syndrome, Radiculopathy (pinched nerve), Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Nerve damage due to injury or systemic illness. NCS is often done alongside EMG (Electromyography) for a more complete evaluation of nerve and muscle function.

Are EEG and NCS tests painful or harmful?

No, both tests are safe and low-risk. EEG is completely painless — electrodes are simply placed on the scalp using a sticky paste. No electricity is passed into your brain. NCS may cause mild discomfort when small electrical impulses are applied to stimulate the nerve, but it is not harmful. Our team ensures you are comfortable and well-informed throughout the procedure.

How should I prepare for an EEG or NCS test?

For EEG: Wash your hair before the test and avoid oils or styling products. Do not consume caffeine (tea/coffee) 8 hours prior. Take your medications as prescribed unless advised otherwise. If sleep-deprived EEG is recommended, follow your doctor’s sleep instructions. For NCS: Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to arms or legs. Avoid applying lotions or creams to the test area. No fasting is required. Our clinic will provide you with complete instructions at the time of appointment.

How long do EEG and NCS tests take?

A standard EEG takes around 30 to 45 minutes. An NCS can take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many nerves are tested. If both tests are done together, allow about 1.5 to 2 hours for the complete evaluation.
