Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy when the body cannot produce enough insulin to control blood sugar levels. It usually appears in the second or third trimester and often goes away after delivery. However, it can increase the risk of high birth weight, complications during delivery, and future diabetes for both mother and baby. Regular monitoring, a healthy diet, exercise, and doctor guidance are important for managing gestational diabetes effectively.

Lipid Profile / Lipid Panel

1️⃣ GTT – Glucose Tolerance Test

Purpose:
Checks how your body handles glucose (sugar) over time. Used to diagnose diabetes or prediabetes, and commonly used in gestational diabetes (pregnancy).

Procedure:

  • Fasting blood sugar is measured

  • Patient drinks glucose solution

  • Blood sugar levels tested at intervals (usually at 1 and 2 hours)

Normal Results:

  • 2-hour value: <140 mg/dL = Normal

  • 140–199 mg/dL = Prediabetes

  • ≥200 mg/dL = Diabetes

2️⃣ HbA1c – Glycated Hemoglobin

Purpose:
Shows average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. It’s a key test to monitor long-term control in diabetic patients.

Normal Range:

  • <5.7% = Normal

  • 5.7%–6.4% = Prediabetes

  • ≥6.5% = Diabetes

Goal for diabetics: Usually <7%, but depends on the individual.

3️⃣ Urea (Blood Urea Nitrogen – BUN)

Purpose:
Assesses kidney function. Diabetes can damage the kidneys over time (diabetic nephropathy).

Normal Range:

  • 7–20 mg/dL (can vary)

High levels = possible kidney dysfunction or dehydration.

4️⃣ Creatinine (Serum Creatinine)

Purpose:
Another important kidney function marker. High creatinine suggests reduced kidney filtering ability.

Normal Range:

  • Men: 0.7–1.3 mg/dL

  • Women: 0.6–1.1 mg/dL

Used to calculate eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate).

5️⃣ Urine Deposits / Routine Urine Test

Purpose:
Detects protein, glucose, ketones, pus cells, red cells, crystals in urine — important to monitor for kidney damage, infections, or uncontrolled sugar.

Findings may include:

  • Proteinuria: Early sign of kidney damage

  • Glucose in urine: Suggests high blood sugar

  • Pus cells: Infection

  • Ketones: Seen in uncontrolled diabetes.

6️⃣ Hemogram (Complete Blood Count – CBC)

Purpose:
Checks overall blood health, including anemia, infections, and immune status.

Includes:

  • Hemoglobin (Hb) – oxygen-carrying capacity

  • WBC count – infection status

  • Platelets – clotting ability

  • RBC indices – anemia types

Important for diabetics who may have chronic fatigue, infections, or inflammation.

7️⃣ Lipid Profile / Lipid Panel

Purpose:
Assesses cholesterol and triglycerides, since diabetics are at high risk for heart disease.

Includes:

  • Total Cholesterol

  • LDL (Bad cholesterol)

  • HDL (Good cholesterol)

  • Triglycerides

Target Levels (for diabetics):

    • Total Cholesterol: <200 mg/dL

    • LDL: <100 mg/dL (or <70 if high-risk)

    • HDL: >40 (men), >50 (women)

    • Triglycerides: <150 mg/dL
