faq
What is an Echocardiogram (Echo) and why is it done?

An Echocardiogram, commonly known as an Echo, is a non-invasive test that uses ultrasound waves to create images of your heart. It helps doctors see how your heart muscles and valves are functioning in real-time. Doctors recommend an Echo to: Evaluate heart function and pumping strength. Detect valve disorders, heart defects, or fluid buildup around the heart. Identify the cause of symptoms like chest pain, breathlessness, or palpitations. Monitor heart diseases over time or after a treatment/surgery. At Greenland Clinic, our Echo tests are performed by trained technicians and interpreted by experienced cardiologists.

Is an Echo test painful or dangerous?

No, an Echocardiogram is completely safe and painless. It does not use any radiation like X-rays or CT scans. Instead, it uses sound waves to capture images, similar to how ultrasounds are used during pregnancy. You’ll simply lie on an exam table while a gel is applied to your chest and a probe (transducer) is moved over your chest to capture images of your heart. The test takes about 20–30 minutes.

How should I prepare for an Echo test?

Most Echo tests don’t require special preparation. You can eat, drink, and take your medications as usual unless instructed otherwise. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, and you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. If you’re having a Stress Echo or Transesophageal Echo (TEE) (less common), our staff will give you specific instructions before the test.

At Greenland Clinic, we offer the following types of Echo tests: Transthoracic Echo (TTE): The most common and non-invasive method to examine heart structure and motion. Stress Echocardiogram: Performed after exercise or medication-induced stress to evaluate heart performance under load. Doppler Echo: Measures blood flow and pressure inside the heart 3D Echocardiography: Advanced imaging for complex valve or chamber assessment (if applicable). Each type of Echo helps cardiologists understand specific aspects of heart function.
